Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy
What is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy?
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT, uses supplemental doses or hormone that have a chemical structure identical to the hormones that the human body naturally products. It is used to help alleviate the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, depression and sleep disturbances, while improving libido, skin texture and sense of wellbeing.
Every person is unique–their healthcare should be, as well.
Traditional hormones, (non bio-identical) are created by pharmaceutical firms for mass use. They are not individualized or created for a specific person. Synthetic HRT is highly controversial because of the health risks associated with taking synthetic hormones. These hormones are a synthetic form of estrogen and progesterone, most often medroxyprogesterone acetate and conjugated estrogens which have never been seen in the body before, and therefore act very differently than their bio-identical counterparts. They are not identical to those that the body naturally produces, are broken down into potentially harmful metabolites, and are associated with health risks such as:
- Heart attack
- Breast cancer
- Gallbladder disease
BHRT is created in a compounding pharmacy-a type of pharmacy in which the pharmacist creates individualized medication by hand, for a specific patient. We use a thorough and unique series of tests and a comprehensive evaluation to determine the specific needs and symptoms of each patient, and have the hormones created based on these findings. The hormones are administered as capsules, topical creams or gels, oral troches or suppositories.
Many of the body’s naturally occurring hormones decline with advancing age. With bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, patients can feel much younger than their years.
We place great emphasis on restoring these hormones back to levels associated with peak performance, as gently and naturally as possible.
